Consultation on traffic management scheme for Wickwar High Street: 21st April – 15th May 2021

In the autumn of 2019 South Gloucestershire Council carried out a preliminary consultation on a proposed traffic management scheme for Wickwar High Street. A report on the consultation was published in September 2020, and proposals have now been finalised.

The formal (and final) public consultation on the proposals will begin on 21st April 2021, lasting for a period of three weeks (to 15th May 2021).

PLEASE NOTE this is a separate scheme to two others planned along the Sodbury Road to place speed tables outside the Tyndale Reach (Bellway) estate and the new Saxon Gate (Linden Homes) estate and to extend the 30mph limit southwards. These have been the subject of separate consultations which have now closed, and are not included in the latest one.

Background

Section 106 funding has been made available for improvements in Wickwar village. A scheme has been designed to address issues raised in the past by the local Councillor, the Parish Council and residents. The scheme comprises several elements including:

  1. Zebra crossing north of Amberley Way.
  2. Extended 20mph zone through the High Street/Station Road, between Inglestone Road and Chase Lane.
  3. Series of speed tables and speed cushions on High Street/Station Road, between Inglestone Road and Chase Lane.
  4. Pedestrian refuge on High Street in vicinity of the Youth Club.
  5. Waiting restrictions on High Street between Inglestone Road and Back Lane.
  6. Junction improvements at High Street/Back lane, and High Street/Buthay Lane, to improve visibility.
  7. Footway build-outs at Station Road/The Downs/High Street, to provide safer crossings for pedestrians.

Purpose of the scheme

The scheme is designed to:

  1. Reduce vehicle speeds through the village
  2. Provide safe crossing points where footways end, and pedestrians are required to cross the road.
  3. Restrict parking on the bend in the vicinity of the Youth Club.
  4. Restrict parking at the junctions of High Street/Back lane and High Street/Buthay Lane, to improve visibility for drivers exiting the side roads.
  5. Slow traffic on southbound approach to Station Road/The Chase junction, to aid drivers exiting the side road.
