South Gloucestershire Council is consulting with residents about measures to control traffic speeds on the Sodbury Road, adjacent to the second new development south of Wickwar (Linden Homes). The consultation opens on 3rd February 2021 and closes on 27th February 2021.
PLEASE NOTE these measures are separate from those which have already been approved adjacent to the new Tyndale Reach estate off the Sodbury Road. Background
A new residential development is being constructed adjacent to Sodbury Road, south of Wickwar. As this development is likely to increase the number of pedestrians and vehicles on Sodbury Road and Wickwar Road, measures are required to control traffic speeds this road. This will be achieved by the combination of a reduction of speed limit and associated traffic calming.
Purpose of Scheme
The purpose of the scheme is to improve safety for road users and pedestrians by reducing the speed limit on Sodbury Road and implementing traffic calming.
Proposed Scheme
The speed limit is proposed to be reduced in the vicinity of the development on Sodbury Road to 30mph between Horwood Lane and Pincots Lane. It is also proposed to install 2 sets of traffic calming, one south of Horwood Lane on Sodbury Road, and the second on Sodbury Road at its junction with Frith Lane, extending onto Frith Lane.
The roads affected by the proposals are:-
– Sodbury Road
– Pincots Lane
– Horwood Lane
– Frith Lane

This proposal should be viewed in light of the previous consultation covering the The High street nd the Downs and a harmonised solution found for both, the need for more speed restrictions and crossing places, further underlines the argument for average speed cameras to be introduced, these will not impact on the character of the High street or cause damage to cars and buildings yet still have the desired effect. They are used very successfully in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire area, when employed in villages and towns.

I would object to a reduction in speed limit below 40mph on this section of road because the number of pedestrians likely to use this section will be negligible.
I would object to traffic calming measures which were to involve speed bumps or pinch points in this section of road; they add to pollution as vehicles accelerate away and speed bumps are destructive to buses and their drivers backs.
However, I would support a roundabout to enable residents to exit the new estates.

Further to this proposal, i feel that the whole of Wickwar should be a 20 mile hour speed limit and as it is a village with people, children walking, dogs and horses with their riders. I think that beyond Pincots there should be an area where the speed reduces from national speed limit to a 40, then 30 and then 20.
